Personal School Counseling Philosophy

In nurturing relationships with all students and through advocacy, one school counselor can create a environment conducive of learning and kindness. In treating your students with kindness and respect, this will become a chain reaction. I want to lay the foundation of trust, kindness, honesty, and respect with my students and faculty.

Define
To define we assess, implement, and develop based on standard that can assist us as school counselors to make sure that we are ensuring improved outcomes for all of our students. At Cold Harbor Elementary, I worked with my supervisor to ensure that we were conducting data based on the mission statements and expectations discussed in meetings with administration.

Deliver
In order to ensure we are delivering what the students need to achieve their highest potential, we work and cultivate ideas with stakeholders in the school such as community members, parents, students, and faculty and staff. I have done this part by working with teachers and parents to ensure the proper lessons have been delivered to students. For instance, I am working with a child with severe separation anxiety, I have worked with her mother and her teacher to cultivate the right lessons and activities.

Manage
ASCA has given us great tools to ensure that we are successfully managing a the school counseling program. For instance, in my work as an intern we use calendars and regularly email with faculty to ensure that time is being managed as well as lessons. Another helpful tool that I have been using is Google Forms. The benefit of this tool is that I can have students briefly tell me what their problem is and have them rate it on a scale of 1-10. This makes creating appointments by urgency more efficient.

Assess
It is critical as school counselors that we regularly check in with our lessons to ensure they are effective in what they are meant to be working on. I want to achieve this by doing surveys and check ins with students to ensure that we are cultivating a school counseling program that is achieving what we have set out to achieve. I assess my current school counseling by having regular meetings and observations by my site supervisor. I have conducted a few groups on anger management and coping skills. I assess these changes in behavior and the effectiveness of group by conducting pre/post tests.
